What Causes Low Vision Symptoms Of This Disorder

low vision symptoms occurs when a person has vision of 20/70 or worse that cannot be corrected using traditional surgery, contact lenses or prescription eyeglasses. People who have low vision typically fall into two categories:

  1. Partially Sighted — They have partial vision between 20/70 and 20/200 with corrective lenses being used.
  2. Legally Blind – Vision is no better than 20/200 even with corrective lenses.

What Causes Low Vision?

Low vision itself is not a disease. Instead, a degenerative disorder affecting the eye will cause low vision symptoms. The most common cause of low vision in adults is macular degeneration — a disease of the retina. But, there are othercauses of low vision, including:

  • Birth defects
  • Injury or trauma to the eye or brain
  • Inherited disease and genetics
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Age

What Are The Symptoms of Low Vision?

Low vision symptoms can go on for years without patients knowing. In fact, it often isn’t until the vision is very poor that a person recognizes there is a problem. While the symptoms of low vision can vary, most common symptoms include:

  • Central vision loss
  • Night blindness
  • Colorblindness
  • Loss of peripheral vision
  • Blurred or hazy vision

Initially the signs may be less noticeable, such as:

  • Difficulty reading small print
  • An inability to recognize faces — especially far away
  • Trouble reading street signs
  • A difficulty distinguishing between colors
  • A difficulty distinguishing objects

An eye exam is required to diagnose low vision and confirm the disorder causing low vision.
